EPIDEMIC FREE NEPAL
"Let's Not Face Another Epidemic in Nepal" 

WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) related epidemics such as Diarrhea, Cholera epidemics are major public health problems in Nepal. In a year of 2009, there was an outbreak of diarrheal diseases in several districts of mid and far western region of Nepal, which has also been spreading in many parts of Nepal. Despite of interventions, the situation has not been improved as expected even in the present context.


Vision/Mission:
Epidemic Free Nepal

Goal:
To prevent WASH related epidemics 

Objectives:
  • To sensitize youths on issues of WASH and Epidemics;
  • To engage and empower youth on issues of WASH and Epidemics;
  • To raise youths' voice on WASH as a social concern;
  • To facilitate youths from different sectors and institutions/organizations on WASH related epidemics;
  • To build and strengthen youth to youth approach on WASH sector
  • To contribute on reducing morbidity and mortality due to WASH related epidemics on affected areas


KEY CONCERNS/ISSUES:
1.  WASH as a basic Human Right
  • In developing countries like Nepal, major causes of morbidity and mortality are related to the diseases and infirmities regarding WASH.
  • About 10500 under 5 aged children die due to water borne diseases in Nepal;
  • The risks of more than 80 % of communicable diseases like Diarrhea, Cholera, etc. can be prevented if proper attention is given to WASH promotion;
  • Epidemics are the most pathetic context to all;
  • MDG has set goal to achieve 50 by 15 for water and Sanitation and GoN has set goal to achieve 100 by 17;
  • GoN has included right to water and sanitation under fundamental right on the draft constitution article 20 (5);
  • Indeed, right to live is right to grow healthy.
2.  Youth as a key stakeholder
  • Youth is the most productive age of life;
  • Youth constitutes more than one third of the total national population in Nepal;
  • Youths are not taking in midstream and given priority as required in WASH sector as well;
  • The campaign believes that they are the key stakeholder for social change;
  • Indeed, youths are change makers.


KEY APPROACH: 
This campaign intends to participate youths for raising issues and advocating for creating Epidemic Free Nepal via Youth-Youth Approach.
