 Press Release

Youths’ helping hands on Bajura Landslide emergency

July 3, 2012: A devastating landslide triggered by intensive rains washed away 57 houses and shops and left five people dead and many injured in the remote village of Pipaldali, located in ward 9 of Bandhu VDC, Bajura at 9:30 pm on May 31, 2012. It also destroyed the Kolti Water Supply System, Kolti Primary Health Centre, 4-5 km of Kolti Pipaldali road, 50-60 ropanis of agricultural land and local irrigation systems. The victims are all from poor families and many were “Dalits”. Due to the remoteness of the village, it took several days for news of this incident to reach the media and relief agencies.

Internalizing to act immediate relief for food, shelter, clothes and health, five youth groups from Kathmandu joint their hands and started a relief campaign, “Call for Action: Please contribute to help Bajura Landslide Victims”.  Fund raising, logistic collection and sensitization activities were carried out during 3 weeks of time starting from June 7 to June 29, 2012. Rupees. one lakh and thirty thousand contributed from more than 1000 contributors has already been already sent to the affected areas. Similarly, 10 Bora clothes, 150 Piyush (water chlorination liquid), 50 Note copies and 12 dozen pencil collected from various well-wishers were also sent to the affected area.

More than 1000 youths/people directly engaged on this cause from various dynamics. Students and Staffs from 14 colleges contributed more than sixty thousands rupees, professionals and staffs from various organizations contributed around seventy thousands rupees, various personals contributed one day salary. “paschim paaila” added ten thousand rupees from Emergency Relief Fund as seed fund. Various well-wishers contributed logistics and all. Most of all, more than 3000 youths/persons became concerned about the emergency issue.

All the reliefs (funds and logistics) collected in Kathmandu were sent to affected families from Kolti and Pipaladadi of Bajura through a local NGO, Human Resource Centre-Bajura. They supported to transport all the logistics from Dhangadi to Kolti (affected areas) and also coordinated to District Disaster Relief Committee and Local disaster relief committee to support the relief effectively.

Collective efforts from various teams with dedicated and motivated youth mass were carried out in the very short period of emergency need. This has justified the youth efforts are never worthless. Instead, always becomes the factor for transformation. 5 youth groups were stand up to raise Rs. 138,000/-, guess if 100 youth groups stand up for such cause???
Cheers!!!
